In the studio now: RobRoy Chalmers

SFAP is currently working with RobRoy Chalmers printing editions of his 18” x 24” copper plate etchings. He has been working on these 16 plates for several years, and recently contracted the studio to help print them. They are dense, deeply etched plates printed in a velvety black ink on Rives BFK Tan paper. RobRoy’s images are abstract and sensual, referencing the geometry of plants, the underlying structures of the body and the intricate abstract patterns of India. RobRoy is also making some one of a kind à la poupée prints to go with the black and tan editions. There are 16 completed plates to edition so we will be at it for a while!

Wikapedia says: “À la poupée is a largely historic intaglio printmaking technique for making color prints by applying different ink colors to a single printing plate using ball-shaped wads of cloth, one for each color.” In French poupée means little doll head referring to those ball shaped wads of cloth! So we apply the ink to the plate “by the little doll heads” .
